Like everyone, I have a slew of New Year’s Resolutions that I probably won’t keep past January (exercise more, drink less). One that I hope to keep up with throughout the year is reading more. To keep myself motivated and eliminate the ‘I have nothing to read’ excuse, I’ve picked out a few books that I’ve been interested in for a while. My goal is to read a book each month, suggestions welcome!
First up on my list is The Long Walk, the true story of a group of soldiers held prisoner in a Siberian labor camp who escaped to freedom in India, walking over 1,000 miles through conditions that threatened their lives almost as much as the inhumane conditions from which they escaped. Several months ago I watched the movie The Way Back, which was inspired by this story, and was moved to know more.
From what I already know, this story is an inspiring account of humans banding together to overcome what should have been unsurvivable circumstances in an unrelenting quest for freedom. I can’t think of a more uplifting tale to start the year.
