3 Outfit Ideas for Holiday Photos

{Holiday 2016 family photo}

Holiday family photos are becoming one of my favorite things we do each year- cheesy, I know, but who doesn’t love getting a new outfit and dressing up with your family!? Last year we didn’t really know what to expect from Cary since the only time that worked for us and the photographer (who also shot our wedding!) was at dusk- beautiful, but also his bedtime, eek! The name of the game was be comfortable yet presentable so that whatever kind of meltdown we were working with wasn’t further complicated by fussy outfits. Well, that didn’t end up mattering because as it turns out, if you put this kid in front of a camera he’s a total ham. Tired, sick, hungry, all of the above, it doesn’t matter, he LOVES the attention!

This year we are shooting at a beautiful park that was originally the grounds of a prominent working farm. It now includes a museum in the restored farmstead, which is included on the National Register of Historic Places. Our wonderful photographer friend Jen of Jennifer Rotz Photography sourced the location for all of her holiday mini sessions, and it looks GORGEOUS. She has such a creative eye that I know this year’s pictures are going to be just as beautiful as last year, which you can check out here!

Since we can count on Cary being in good spirits, we don’t have to plan our outfits around him as much, and can get a little more creative. When putting together coordinating family looks for photos, I like to start with my outfit first, and then put together outfits for Greg and Cary around that. I pull in similar colors, types of clothing, and general level of dressiness to make things cohesive.

I’ve put together 3 different looks to choose from- Glam, Rustic, and Cozy. I’m still not sure which look we’re going with. I love them all! I guess it will be a game time decision, with all good options to choose from!

Last year when Greg and I went out for our anniversary (which is New Year’s Eve!) I wore this outfit and have been thinking about what a good one it was ever since. It was festive, sophisticated, and best of all warm! I loved the contrast of the cozy knit sweater with the sequins, and it made a piece of clothing that could veer toward party or novelty in style somehow feel like a neutral. Paired with the black suede pump, a bright lip, and a velvet bow hair tie, this look is glam and festive without being kitschy.

One of my favorite outfit combinations is a sweater dress, cozy scarf, and boots. I’d pair a green sweater dress with brown boots, and a camel sweater dress with black boots, then play with different scarves to bring in a few accent colors. There aren’t a ton of green sweater dresses out there, but I found a few that are very similar to a dress I used to have, and loved, but threw in the donate pile in a particularly aggressive closet clean out. I hate when that happens!

This look makes me want to chop down my own christmas tree, mull cider over a campfire surrounded by glistening white snow, and other winter activities that sound otherwise idyllic, should they not take place outdoors in freezing weather. Wardrobe staples like jeans, booties, chambray, and flannel make this look one that combines pieces you may even already own! I’m a big fan of a double layer of shirts when it’s starting to get chilly enough to wear a coat. That, paired with a cozy vest, and chic cold weather accessories, buys a little time before you have to start covering up your outfit with heavy outerwear!

Now, let’s just hope the kid cooperates this time around!
